And then I fainted

So, to pick up right where we left off yesterday…

Gorgeous Ariat clogs in hand, I decided to check TJ Maxx next door (who the hell puts a Marshall’s right next to a TJ Maxx?) before driving home to U City.

Just a quick stop, y’know.  Just to say I did.

I did.

Did I ever.

It was in this unassuming TJ Maxx, in an unassuming strip mall, in an unassuming suburb of an unassuming city, that I found the deal of a lifetime.

The kind of deal that most people (erm, if you’re me anyway) only dream about.  The kind of dream where you wake up and think “Wow that didn’t happen but what if it did?!”

It did.

Check ‘em out.   Born.  Black.  Kitten heel.  Tailored detailing.  Pewter-toned buckle.

Perfect fit, even though they’re marked as a size 6 (and, in my experience, Borns usually tend to run about a half-size small).

And the price?  I could scarcely believe it:

No, really.  Let’s look again:

And a third time, for luck:

I swear to y’all, I almost started hyperventilating right there in the store.  My hands were shaking as I tried them on.  Would they?  Could they?  YES, my friends.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

When I got home and showed them off to Jeff (he was about as impressed as you’d think he would be (not very)), I decided to do a bit of archaeology and see how much these puppies would’ve cost in a real store.

So I started peeling:

and peeling:

There were seriously like 10 layers of clearance labels on these shoes.

Why hadn’t anybody bought them before now?

Until…

(“Compare at $75.00″)

And that, my friends, is the deal of a lifetime.

PS>And that, my friends, is a wad of cat hair and a “dead” “mouse”.

Maybe speakerphone?

Last night I was driving home from Marshall’s and I was so excited I could hardly believe it, and–I shit you not–the one thought going through my mind was “I wish I could call my blog and tell everyone all about it!”.  That’s right, I was too excited to wait ’till I got home to tell y’all.

If I called, would anyone answer?

Too philosophical for 7am.  Hell, too philosophical for 8:30pm (the time last night when that illogical thought first coursed its way through my feeble brain).

At any rate, I just called my mom and told her.

The end.

Just kidding.  Let’s start that one over, shall we?

Last night after dinner I went back to Marshall’s to return those ill-fitting (and thus ill-fated) Born flats.  I was sad, ’cause they were really, really, really cute.  But I was also happy, ’cause hey!  look at my frugality!  Not so long ago, I would’ve kept those shoes, on the offhand chance that my feet ever shrank (no, really).  I was proud of myself, as I drove all the fucking way to West County to return them.

Wait.  All-the-fucking-way-to-West-County?

Minor part of my newfound “frugality” philosophy–I thought that maybe if I went to a different Marshall’s I might find the pair in the next size up, or even a different pair of clearanced Borns.

See?  In my brain, “frugality” means “buying more stuff”.  Interesting how things work in there.

Anywhoo, so I did return those flats, and with $15 of store credit burning a hole in my pocket, I started browsing.  And would you believe I found something?  I know, right?!

But they’re not Borns.

They’re not even flats.

They’re:

These, my friends, are the EXACT SHOE that I almost got back at the mall a couple weeks ago, in lieu of my beloved Born Bridget’s.

I was literally traipsing back and forth down the length of the mall, to Macy’s and to the Walking Store and back, trying to decide which shoes I would get.

And why didn’t I get them that day at the Walking Store?  The price–$110–was, erm, cost-prohibitive at the time (moot point, as my mom ended up buying the shoes for me, but that’s irrelevant to the story).

So I bought my Bridget’s, and I’d resigned myself to not getting these Ariats, these walking-on-clouds dreamy little pieces of nirvana.

These clogs are the *perfect* weekend shoe.  They’re comfy beyond belief, and don’t slip around on my feet at all.

I’m just thoroughly enamoured of them.

Oh, and the best part?

That’s right, less than half the price of the identical item at the mall.

Want me to prove it to you?

Same thing.  Right here $109.00 $98.10 (sale).

I think I must add Ariat to my comfy-shoe arsenal (which now contains:  Keen, Birkenstock, Born, and Ariat–for those of you keeping count.  Lucchesse gets an honorable mention, if only for the fact that I wore them for 4 solid days in Chicago this spring and walked the whole Magnificent Mile and back and my feet didn’t fall off).

This is also reassuring to me, because you might recall that way-back-when I blogged about some other Ariat boots I’ve got an interest in.  And now that I know they play nicely with my feet, I can feel a lot more confident about ordering them.  And those Born boots.  Oh, and those Born heels.  Uh-oh.

For those of you who aren’t completely sick of me talking incessantly about shoes I love, check back tonight for the holy-mother-of-god deal of the century.

Fantastic

Way back when, I posted about Ellen DeGeneres’ and Portia de Rossi’s engagement, and asked your all’s opinions on the matter.

Today I was down at the corner grocer’s buying lunch, and I saw People mag’s cover:

Abbreviated story here, but they make you buy the magazine to read the whole thing.

I just have one thing to say:  FINALLY! I know the issue is at the height of national attention right now, but I do hope that this ultra-famous couple’s wedding will help paint it in a positive light.  Let’s not debate, let’s just be happy for them, m’kay?

Oh, and here’s another shot of Portia’s dress:

Gorgeous!  I can’t wait to see more pictures as they appear.  But is it enough to (::gasp::) make me buy an entertainment mag?  We shall see…

I can do anything in my water wings

Since I seem to get off on posting pictures of my feet lately, and also since I’m so all about taking 10 minutes out of my precious, packed morningtime routing to lounge on the couch and *take* said pictures of my feet, and ALSO since I don’t give one whit about how blurry or over-dark those photos will be, well, I think you can guess what I did this morning:

Behold, one completed pair of aquaphobia socks.  Made them out of Lorna’s Laces that I bought at Loopy Knits in Chicago (on our Northwestern visit), a yarn which is *totally* worth all the hype.  Totally.

Except one thing:  pooling.

Usually I’m not a huge fan of pooling, though occasionally I try to play along with that game.  I guess I would describe myself as someone who can appreciate pooling and recognize that others like it, while still not liking it meself.

So I guess you all know where this is going, considering what LL does…

LL is characterized, I’ve read, by its tendency to flash and pool.  So I thought I’d outsmart the yarn, and make the socks out of Knitfreak’s Aquaphobia pattern–one which is like an allover eye-of-partridge, with the only stockinette sections being the sole and toe of the socks.  If anything could take care of LL’s pooling, it would *have* to be a pattern where 25% of all stitches are slipped, wouldn’t it?

In places, it worked.  I love how you can see the slipped stitches here, hopping up above the line of their bretheren.  It’s almost a stranded-like effect, without, y’know, being stranded (which is a good thing, in my book).  So I like that.

But then other places (yes I know this is on the gusset decrease–so sue me), this tenacious little fucker just pooled away.  Harrumph.

Oddly enough, it was on the sole (past the gusset decreases), where the flashing and pooling was at a minimum.  Is the LL trying to tell me something?

Well, regardless, I do still <3 it–even if I do feel compulsed to glare at the flashing and mutter a few choice words under my breath.

Oh, but I do have one sad thing to mention:

Not gonna happen.  I could barely hobble with these things on + socks.  ::sigh:: Back to Marshall’s, they must go.

PS>Because I’m all about realism, here’s my photo shoot wardrobe (subtitle:  a backlit arm’s-length self-portrait at low shutterspeed)

Quality.  I’m all about it.  And also, my purple bathrobe.

At least I’ll be comfortable when I run away

I have a new True Love.

There, I said it.  I have found a new Farm Boy to my Buttercup, a new Shrek to my Fiona, a new reduced-fat blueberry coffee cake to my grande mocha light frappucino.

Love, thy name is Bridget.  Born Bridget.

Mom bought me these shoes a couple weeks ago, because I’m a total weenie.  After only a week of heading back and forth between my desk and the copy machine, walking a few blocks to grab lunch, and spending hours on my feet sorting and filing, my feet were KILLING ME.  All those cute work heels I bought?  They each have a bit of the devil in them.

So my mom, being a mom, bought me some cute Born shoes.

These may be my first Born shoes, but they’re definitely not my last.  My newest hobby is browsing the Born website and window-shopping which pair I’m going to buy next.  I’m a TOTAL convert.  Between Born, Birkenstocks, and Keens, I don’t think I’ll ever buy another pair of shoes at Payless ever again.  I’m utterly in love.

Even though I could really use some new work clothes, I think shoes take priority–maybe even priority over yarn (yes, you read that right!)  The only question is, which to buy next?

Wellesley:

(on sale for $90.00 at shoeline.com)

Charisma:

($97.00 at shoeline.com)

Taro:

($197.00 at shoeline.com)

Varrow:

($101.00 at shoeline.com)

And for the weekends, Montara:

(on sale for $64.00 at shoeline.com)

My birthday’s next month…if anybody of the gift-giving inclination is reading this, please know that cash and/or zappos gift certificates and/or shoeline gift certificates would be most welcome

Any other Born addicts out there?

PS>Please notice that many of these shoes would lend themselves well to being paired with hand-knitted socks. No coincidence!

On my broom

Having accomplished this:

Which, close-up, looks like this:

and this:

and, purely by happenstance, this:

and finally, this:
,

Jeff and I are now ready to hit the road for the 15th (?) annual family get-together thingy on my dad’s side.  I bring a double batch of these fabulous snickerdoodles every year, and I think they probably wouldn’t let me in if I didn’t.

But really, though, can you blame them?

Hang tight till Monday, and there’ll be a recipe in it for ya’!

What to do, what to do?

Knitters, I need your opinions.

I bought a *lovely* skein of Fleece Artist Somoko:

And I turned it into this:

No pictures of it on me, because it’s morning and truthfully, I’m still wearing yesterday’s polo and some pajama pants I’ve had since the 7th grade (not kidding).

So here’s my problem.  The texture is lovely, and just what I was looking for (loose and drapey):

I also think the colors play together well:

But…I’m just not *feeling* it, you know?  I had to end it a few rows sooner than I’d anticipated (running out of yarn), so the end is rolling a bit (despite my best efforts to avoid that, by putting in an eyelet row before BO).

I dunno.  It’s all right.  It was only a few days’ worth of knitting, and I like it fine enough, but I’m just not OMG head-over-heels about it.

Should I go ahead and block it and hope that I love it more then?  I suppose if I block it, there’s really no turning back–no frogging.

If I do frog it, then I’ll use this yarn for something else lovely–a pair of socks, maybe a simple scarf…

I just can’t make up my mind.  Knitters, what would you do?
