Did I say 6:00? I meant two days later…

So, to pick up where I left off on the afternoon of the 24th…

Things got pretty hairy there at the end.  No hairs in the cookies, but a few more grey ones on my head.

The cinnamon rolls were messy to make, so there aren’t really any in-progress shots of that (though all the details you could ever need, are on the recipe’s page).

I was running out of flat surfaces, hardcore.  So I brought in all of our TV trays, and lined the kitchen walls with them:

(I think I caught Roxie mid-blink, there)

I was also running out of trivets and cooling racks, so I made a do with a couple coasters and my oven mitt:

In my harried, frazzled state, that looked like a face, and I found it extremely amusing.  EXTREMELY.  AMUSING.

We were getting to the part where I could’ve really used another pair of hands, as long as that pair of hands would be willing to read my mind, do exactly as I say, and do everything perfectly.  (I don’t think such pair of hands exists, though I bet my mom’s would come pretty close)

(the above photo really downplays the sheer mess on that far counter – I rolled the cinnamon rolls out directly on the counter rather than risk gunking up my breadboard.  Good choice, because butter and sugar and cinnamon splooged EVERYWHERE.  It was such a mess!)

I’d long since stuck my rings and watch on a high shelf to preserve them against the onslaught of icing and cinnamon, but my periodic texting and phone calls throughout the day left my phone in a bit of a state:

(Hey look!  It’s my Keens and my favorite apron, too!)

Can ya see the powdered sugar?

I churned out cinnamon rolls as quickly as I could, and in between tending to those I iced sugar cookies like a madwoman.  One batch of rolls makes 7 pans, of about 7 or 8 rolls each:

They turned out marelously, by the way.  I stuck to the recipe almost exactly.  Here’s one pan before it got its maple glaze:

By about 6:00, I had the last pans of cinnamon rolls in the oven…

and I was still icing cookies.  I knew Jeff would be home at about 6:20, and I wanted to be ready to assembly-line the tins as soon as he walked in the door.

(I drank 6 Diet Cokes that day.  If you look closely, you can probably find a can in ‘most every photo)

Glazed cinnamon rolls:

Sure enough, Jeff walked in the door right at 6:20, and I had the empty tins laid out, ready to set him to work

I handed him the big box of snickerdoodles, and I started divvying up the fudge into each tin.  Then he did the snowballs while I did the lemonade drops, and he did the sugar cookie stars while I did the candy canes…and somehow it all got done.

I even had time to scribble little notes and tuck them into the bottom of each tin:

Tins all assembled, I covered the cinnamon rolls in plastic wrap then laid them on top of each tin, and tied it all up with a pretty bow:

(That one also got a wee little pair of mittens – my original goal was to put a wee little pair of mittens on *every* one, but that had to fall by the wayside).  So I gave the lone pair to Jeff’s cousins, because I’m still trying to make them like me.

From there we dashed off to Jeff’s family holiday dinner, and when we got home I tied up and beautified and photographed the remaining 10 tins (ten tins! tentintentintentin….erm…don’t mind me.)

It was after midnight, and we had to get up at 4am to drive to Kansas City, so I fell into bed exhausted, and vowed that I’ll NEVER do this again.  Never.

Nope, next year I’m going to give myself *3* days to bake

PS>Psst!  The dishes are still waiting!

2:00-ish update

OK, so it’s been a few hours.

The lemonade drops are all done, cooled, and packed away.

After a quick trip to the grocery store, I was ready to start cutting and baking the sugar cookies.

Then I had an “aww heck, why not?” moment and made two double-sized batches of fudge, instead:

The one on the left is plain fudge (with almond bark swirls atop); the one on the right has chopped up almonds in it.

And in my continuing quest to show y’all that I’m really not perfect (uhh….you do think I’m perfect, right?  This quest is necessary, right?), I’ll show you how I broke one of the cardinal rules of baking:

See, for the brownies on the left, I was going to do a similar almond bark swirl atop, only I had a spur-of-the-moment whim to make the swirls red and green.  So I put a few drops of food coloring into my melted almond bark…

You know where this is going, right?  And truthfully, so did I.  I KNEW that it doesn’t work.  I KNEW that almond bark must remain pure in form and essence.

I KNEW that.  But there I was, “dur de dur de dur”, squirting food coloring into my almond bark.

Some people never learn.

Some people do, but are just to damned stupid to remember.

Anyway, moving on…

Here’s the “rolling and cutting” phase of sugar cookie making, in progress:

I was about midway through the process when I took that.

I looooove the smell of cookies baking, but truthfully since I’ve been smelling that nonstop for 3 days, I’ve pretty much stopped noticing it by now.  Sad day.

Meanwhile, despite my half-assed “clean as you go” efforts, my kitchen is becoming an increasingly shocking mess:

I noticed no one offered to come clean it for me.

I’ll remember that, when y’all are wanting to eat some baked goodness.

Just sayin’.

To fit all the sugar cookies on racks, I had to bust out the big guns:

Oh yes it is, the 3-tiered baking rack.

Anybody know where I can buy one that’s bigger, per-sheet?  This one is…I dunno…maybe 12″ x 16″?  I’m wanting one that’s more like the sheet on the left (the candy cane one), only with 3 tiers.

Then, there will be nothing that stands in the way of TOTAL WORLD DOMINATION.

Ahem.

Some people will roll out their dough scraps 3 or even 4 times.  I find that the extra flour worked in with each rolling, as well as the abuse to the dough, really has a negative impact on the finished cookie.  You can taste the difference between a first-roll cookie and a fourth-roll cookie.  So I only roll mine twice.

Plus, that’s more scraps for me to eat.

::burp::

Meanwhile, the finished cookies continue to wait patiently:

Now I’ve got my first batch of cinnamon rolls started (scalded milk is cooling as we speak), and I’m off to frost some sugar cookies!

Will try to check back in before we go to the Hoops family dinner….see ya ’round 6:00!

Morning baking update

Remember when I got married, and practically blogged my way down the aisle?

Remember how y’all made fun of me?

Well, I’m about to do it again…notsomuch with the “getting married” part, but yes with the “blogging when I have sooo many other things to be doing” part.

On Monday night I made 7 batches of snickerdoodles.

Here are 2:

For the first time in my 15+ year career as a Snickerdoodle Baker, they turned out totally screwed up.  My kitchen was having dire (and I mean DIRE) humidity issues and the cookies were totally drying out as they cooled.

1 more batch is in the trash, because it was 1am and I was tired as all get-out, and I forgot to put in both the eggs, and the cream of tartar.  Yes, I know.  But it was 1am.

4 more batches turned out a-ok, happy yum-yum, and are living in here:

(top and bottom containers)

The middle container above, contains 2 batches of my snowball mint-chocolate-chip cookies.  Almost pure butter and chocolate.  ECSTACY.

I made those last night (Tuesday night).

This morning I woke up at 6:30, and made 3 batches of sugar cookie dough, which are living in my covered 9×13, as all my big Tupperwares and mixing bowls are being otherwise utilized:

They’ve been chilling for an hour or so; they’ll be ready to roll out as soon as I am.

As I’ve been writing this, I’ve been running back and forth between the kitchen, where I’ve got 2 batches’ worth of lemonade drops:

(that picture was from about an hour ago; the last batch is about to come out of the oven)

Lemonade drop dough:

OK, I just pulled the last batch out of the oven, and took my camera with me:

95 cookies.  You can see my pots of water boiling in the background (anybody want to tear some sheets up into bandages with me?  Plane some firewood into splints?  Anybody?  Anybody?)

I also grabbed quick shots of the snowballs:

(that’s wax paper separating the layers, not just really weird focus )

And successful snickerdoodles:

Yum.

Y’all have no idea how disheartening it was to screw up snickerdoodles.  I mean, if there’s one recipe I’m famous for, it’s my snickerdoodles.  Remember my family reunion in August?  They wouldn’t let me in the door without ‘em.  So for those to not go well, well that was just bizarre.

But anyway, now I’m almost out of butter:

(When is 6 lb of butter not enough?  When you’re baking a bajillionty-dozen cookies!)

…so I’m off to the grocery store.  Might brush my teeth first.  Probably should.

When I get back, I’ll be rolling out the sugar cookies and baking them, and then it’s on to PW’s cinnamon rolls!  I may make a couple batches of fudge, too, if I have the time…

Who will clean my kitchen while I’m gone?

(will try to check in again ’round 2:00 or so.  See ya then!)

Bet you’ll never guess what I’ll be doing…

6 lb of butter, 4 dozen eggs…

3 gallons of (assorted) milks…

And a little bit of holiday-cheer-in-a-carton…

Every chip and chocolate morsel imaginable…

(and yah, that frozen lemonade too)

20+ lbs of flour…

And sugar..

(and shortening and dried milk and more flour too)

I also stocked up on my other baking staples…

And bought a metric shitton (technical term) of tins and ribbons:

Any guesses what my super-secret plan is? I know, it’s so freaking cryptic.

I’ll get started right after I finish this holiday-cheer-in-a-carton-glass.  I may even post recipes accordingly

PS>The extent of this year’s decorating:

(grrr….that’s blurry, and I’m too lazy to take another.  At least the next one turned out)

And to all a good night (filled with baking)!

All. Damn. Evening.

This is what happens whenever we give Roxie a new squeakie:

(you don’t have to watch the whole thing, unless you’re as entertained by it as I am)

Someone come rescue me from my own home?

Christmas Meme

From Maryse and Carole:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper if at all possible – I’ll put stuff in boxes to make it nice and square.  Because aren’t wrapped packages just more fun to open?
2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial tabletop tree right now, because we’re so mobile…like gypsies…but one day, it’ll be real!
3. When do you put up the tree? As soon after Thanksgiving as Jeff will let me.  I love it!
4. When do you take the tree down? It just looks sad after Christmas, doesn’t it?  I usually take it down around New Year’s.
5. Do you like eggnog? Mmmmmmmmm.  I’d bathe in the stuff!  (And I also LOVE that it comes in “lite” now!)
6. Favorite gift received as a child? Oh boy.  Since I never got the Cozy Coupe OR the CD player OR the pony, I guess I’d say that my favorites were either the cozy-warm sleeping bag or the bedroom furniture and decorations.  Or my bike!  Of course…my first bike!
7. Hardest person to buy for? My granddad, because he has *everything*.
8. Easiest person to buy for? Probably Jeff, because I’m always around throughout the year to hear his “I’d like to have…”’s.  Or my mom, since I’ve got the yarn to knit her about 6 things!
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Of course not.
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Never emailed them before, but I do usually mail them.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? None really come to mind, though I do remember getting some “uh…WTF?’s” from my high school boyfriend.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Either Christmas Vacation or A Christmas Story.
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Usually just after Thanksgiving, and I’ve got it all taken care of by about…now.  This year we still have a couple of people to buy for, cards to buy, and at least one project to finish.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Hmm…don’t think so. But I do give stuff away that’s not really to my tastes.  And then only if I can tell the gift giver didn’t really put any thought or effort into the initial gift.  Never if it’s anything that was lovingly picked out just for me.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? I always liked my mom’s breakfasts on Christmas morning.  Usually cinnamon rolls or monkey bread or some other deliciousness.
16. Lights on the tree? Who doesn’t?
17. Favorite Christmas song? Anything from the Barenaked Ladies Christmas album (given to me last year by my loving husband)
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Ideally we’ll get to the point where people come to *us*, but for now we go to KC.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Yes.
20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Sometimes we’ve done stockings on Christmas eve, but that’s different than what I did growing up.  I sorta like it, though.  It’s an appetizer for Christmas morning.
21. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? The song “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”  Because singer lady?  When I’m driving in dreary sleety weather on my way home from work and I’m exhausted and stressed and starving, ain’t nothin’ wonderful about it.  So stop pretending.
22. Favorite ornament theme or color? I like it to be eclectic, and pretty much anything not religious is fine with me.  I try for them all to have personal signifigance, though.
23. What do you want for Christmas this year? A swift and ball winder.  Jewelry.  Those cute LL Bean boots and corduroy skirt.  YARN.  A bigger zoom lens for my camera.
24. Angel on the tree top or a star? A star right now, but once we have a big tree, we’ll have a cardinal topper.
25. Favorite Christmas dinner? Whatever my dad cooks.  Usually it’s a repeat of Thanksgiving, with a few tweaks.  Sometimes they make ham.  I refuse to associate with it.

Wascally Wabbit

Onwy the wabbit I’m hunting isn’t the kind of wabbit you may be thinking of.

The wabbit I want isn’t this kind:

No, the wabbit I want isn’t even a “wabbit” at aww, per se.

My metaphoricaw “wabbit” is actually a dwessew.

…Erm, this is getting rather hard to read.

What I’m trying to say is, I have spent the better part of 6 months looking for a dresser.

And not just any dresser, of course (would you expect any less from me?).

No, the dresser I’m looking for must be the exact replica of a dresser from my childhood, an antique which my mother *cruelly* usurped mere hours after I vacated my childhood home, and is now using for her own clothes.  What kind of mother would just steal her grown child’s dresser, after said grown child has left the house?

(mine, that’s who.)

Furthermore, what kind of mother would turn down the grown child’s offer of “I’ll buy it for $200 and you can bring it out to St. Louis for me”?

Makes no sense at all.

.
.
.
As the dresser-in-question currently lives in my parents’ house in Kansas City, and as I’m not presently *in* Kansas City to take a photo of it, here’s the closest stand-in that Google Image Search can provide:

[[disclaimer:  closest stand-in = not really all that similar]]

Essentially, my beloved is a “handkercheif dresser” – that means one with 2-4 larger drawers at the bottom, two smaller ones up top, and an attached mirror:

Only, (like the dresser my mom stole from me), it shouldn’t be so…ostentatious.  Simple, clean, graceful lines that are in keeping with the early 20th century farmhouse*/Mission/Arts-and-Crafts vibe.

The term “handkercheif dresser”, you see, comes from those two little drawers – ostensibly designed to hold handkercheifs, though as a child I used mine to store my bookmark collection, my inhaler, and a wide assortment of plastic pony beads.

I was a sad child.

At any rate, I continually find myself completely unable to find a dresser which meets my (admittedly exacting) specifications.  The biggest hurdle is all the…floof…that they all seem to display.  Whorls and flowers and medallions and turned wood lah-de-dahs.  And I’ll have none of that!

But, as I mentioned before, the dresser of my dreams lies just out of my reach, in the cold clutches of my parents’ evil lair.  It is in amazing condition (less the marker scribbles inside the drawers and penny rammed into a keyhole), naturally void of any manner of medallions or whorls, and is completely unattainable.  Just out of my reach.  ::pouts::

Mom?  You drive a hard bargain.  $250.  Final offer.  PLEASE?!

So y’all, help me feel not so alone…What’s just out of reach for you?

Someday

Aldi has these delicious seasonal cookies…Speculaas, I think? German.  Shaped like windmills and donkeys and bridges and who-knows-what-else.  DELICIOUS.  I only take them in my lunch at work, and I only bring 2 at a time – because otherwise I KNOW I’d eat the whole bag (and I’m soooo not an “eat the whole bag” type of person).
~~
Know what’s really dumb?  I really miss going to the Christmas section at the WalMart in Kirksville.  I hate WalMart, but in that small town of very limited shopping opportunities, there was really no place else to go.  And really, there’s nothing better than the boxes and boxes of wrapping paper tubes, the light displays, the two full aisles of ornaments…  round it out with a trip to the stores downtown and a chai latte from Washington Street Java Co, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect afternoon.
~~
If you could steal anybody’s life, whose would it be?  I think I’d steal the Pioneer Woman’s.  Only the cooking posts wouldn’t contain any meat.  That’d be the biggest difference.
~~
I just Twitter‘d that I can’t wait for this phase of my life to be over, and it’s true.  I would like very much to just skip ahead to the staying-at-home, babymaking, lots of baking, and laundry-on-a-clothesline phase.
~~
My puppy’s tummy is still sick, though I do think she’s on the mend.  I will sure be glad to get her off the $2/can dog food, though!
~~
On Friday I spilled tea on my keyboard here at work – it was the only fancy ergonomic one here in my office.  Now the H, K, and O keys don’t work, so I had to trade it out for a standard keyboard.  And all day today I’ve felt like my thumbs were bumping into each other and I don’t know which hand to use to type Y or B anymore.
~~
My mom finally saw my tattoo in person.  And guess what?  She still loves me.  I knew she would.  (She even said it “wasn’t that bad.”  I’ll take that as the go-ahead to work on the full backpiece of Frodo and Harry Potter battling Darth Vader!)
~~
Know what I love?  My grandma gave me 15 lbs of unshelled pecans, and last night I picked a couple pounds’ worth (this will be a week-long project).  They come from a farm (grove?) near her house in central Missouri.  Isn’t that fantastic?  These local items are far superior (both in taste/quality and economy/environmentally) to those that come in the plastic bags at the grocery store.  And I realized, that’s how I approach many things in my life – our bread comes from my own kitchen, my favorite soup bowl was handmade from clay that originated in an exurb of Kansas City (and crafted by the owner of that land), and I warm myself in socks made of yarn dyed right here in St. Louis.  Little things, for sure, but things that make my life so much more pleasant and personalized (isn’t that how life should be?).
~~
On Saturday my mom and I went shopping in the Loop, and we stopped in at a shop that sold Tibetan singing bowls.  I learned how to use one, and fell in love with one that was (gulp) $109.  Well worth the money, in my opinion – though that doesn’t mean I have the money to spend right now!  It has made me think seriously about approaching meditation, though – for the physical and psychological effects, as y’all know I’ve not got a whiff of spirituality about me!
~~
I didn’t buy a bowl, but Mom did buy me this gorgeous moonstone ring.  Nepalese.  (Not exactly local, but it’s fair trade, at least)

I love it.  It’s my new favorite.  (Not so much love for the florescent lighting here at work )
~~
I’m not sure if we’re going to send out Christmas cards this year or not – if nothing else, it can be a good way to let everybody know that we’ve moved, but is that really worth all the money and time?  Though it is always fun finding secular and witty (but not tacky) cards…
~~
I have an overwhelming desire to make crackers (see:  “local,” above).  Garlic and parmesan and onion.  And dip them in a replication of the out-of-this-world artichoke dip we had at Fitz’s on Saturday night (goes down reeeal smooth with a diet cream soda or two!)
~~
In the same way I came to own the moonstone ring, I have recently come into possession of a skein of Noro sock yarn. Soon it shall become some super-basic socks – I’ll let the color do the talking.  I can’t wait!  Must get the knitting mojo back…where did I leave it?
~~
We went to Target last night to buy Mary Poppins on DVD (A pecan-shelling tradition from my childhood – ya pick pecans, ya watch Mary Poppins.  The two go hand-in-hand), but it was $20.  Seriously.  For a stinkin’ DVD that came out 40 years ago?
~~
It’s December 8th.  Every year (and I do mean *every year*) by now I’ve had a Christmas countdown calendar going.  My co-workers already think I’m weird – I might just sit here and make a paper chain at my desk.  Tear off a link for every day leading up to the holiday!
~~

Smoochie boochies!

(I really want to re-watch Clerks now)
