[Insert contented smile here]

My order (thanks Mom!) from Bare Sheep Yarn arrived last night.

I didn’t notice the package Jeff had placed on the coffee table until after I’d come home, taken Roxie to the dog park, and had a snack.

So the heart attack was delayed just a bit.

But only a bit.

Because OMG guys.  Gor-JUS!

Or, if you want to be all proper-like:  GORGEOUS!

Mmmmm.

“Blue Period” superwash merino fingering/sport, 100g/365yd.  Perhaps to become fingerless gloves, or maybe cozy mittens?

“Beth” superwash merino fingering, 100g/400yd.  I think I may save it for a female Hoopling.  MAY.

“Dianne” superwash merino/nylon fingering, 480yd/100g.  I have the crazy urge to make a little shawlette in a charming and simple textured pattern.

“Lobster Bisque” worsted, 4oz/150yd.  I love this one more than words.  Mmmmmmmmm.

“Lavender and Sunflowers” superwash merino fingering/sport.  Cheerful, delicate, lacy socks – STAT!

“Petunia” superwash merino fingering.  This is destined to be socks, too – almost definitely.

As always, the heartiest of thanks to my dear, dear  yarn enabler mother.

Yarn makes my heart beat.  Yarn gets me out of bed in the morning.  Yarn makes the world go ’round.

FINALLY

I’ve been sitting on this post for seriously 2 weeks; it’s really ridiculous that I haven’t gotten it up before now.  (Though really, it’s probably only my mom’s nightly nagging that has me doing it NOW, and not in another two weeks.  I put the “L” in LSG, y’know.)

Ye Olde To Do List

1) Exfoliate my face, hardcore
2) Eat copious amounts of baked chips and Trader Joe’s guaca-salsa (OMG that stuff has crack in it, I swear.  And it’s low fat!)
3) Tidy up around the house.  And by tidy I mean, throw away anything that doesn’t move (and some things that do (I’m looking at you, kittycats!))
4) Put buttons on my Maude sweater, under the threat of death or at least the threat of an unpleasant uggy feeling.
5) Finish laundry, so that I don’t have to wear tea towels pinned together to work next week
6) Make penne alla vodka WHICH is not (contrary to Jeff’s initial thought), penne with vodka poured over it
7) Pack away our heavy winter coats in Ziploc Big Bags and cedar (a sure promise that the snow gods will pay us one more visit on their way to the southern hemisphere)
8) Bake oatmeal chocolate chip cookies wearing my new apron
9) Buy a new shower curtain liner, or perhaps send Jeff out for same
10) Bathe the dog (and mop the bathroom floor in the process)
11) Sit on the couch and watch The Office and eat Lindt truffles
12) PMS a whole bunch
13) In conjunction with 12), cry or giggle overmuch
14) Find adorable and perfect brown Born flats for under $20 (one can dream, eh?)
15) Wash hair, with goal of drying and styling without tears
16) Blog the most delicious post re: my mom’s artistry.  It has been sitting in my mental queue for entirely too long
17) Drink tea.  Then more tea.  Then for a change, perhaps some iced tea
18) Sort out earring storage method (hint relating to 16), which you’ve probably already figured out), perhaps one involving felt
19) Cry or giggle overmuch some more, because I can
20) Clean out ye olde litterbox

Uh-oh

If somewhere out there, there are cosmic forces which have determined that I only get X amount of luck for my ENTIRE LIFE, I sure hope I haven’t shot my whole wad on this:

“Hi Kate Hoops,  CONGRATULATIONS!!!  Your name has been drawn for a free lunch at City Grocers.  You can pick up your gift card ($7.99 value) at City Grocers.”

….but on the other hand, hey – free lunch!

Indie Awesomeness

First, a note on the hair:

This morning, I washed it and tried to style it myself.  It didn’t work.  OMG there’s no understating the extent to which it DIDN’T WORK.  I cried.  I spent 45 minutes fooling around with it.  Now, the best I can manage is something that makes me look like a high school assistant principal.  It’s pathetic.

I called my stylist.  I hope she calls me back and makes it all better.  Because dudes, I am not going to run around looking like an assistant principal

So anyway – back to fun stuff.

On Sunday, when I was still happy with my life (see above), Jeff and I went to the Green with Indie craft show, after I’d heard about it on Ravelry.

SO much fun.  Even Jeff agreed that it was not entirely unpleasant

The merch was very modern and, well, indie. Lots of cool jewelry, some handspun yarn, salvaged and repurposed stuff, vintage clothing, etc.  Nary a 2×4-painted-like-a-snowman to be seen

It was also awesome seeing so many etsy sellers all in one place – especially those whose goods I’ve oogled from afar!

Love this “Greetings from Chesterfield” postcard by bigsmalltown:

I’d discovered Bill’s stuff somewhere (heck if I can remember where) in the past and was just thrilled to see it in person.  This postcard so succinctly sums up everything I hate about St. Louis.  I shall treasure it forever.

From SmellGood, I got the most deeeeelicious solid perfume ever!

It reminds me of a body spray that I had when I was in the 6th grade, sothe nostalgia factor is high.  Though I’m not sure why I want to be reminded of a time when I was even fat(ter) and hormonal(er) than I am now.

The scent really lasts, too.  I put some on my wrist yesterday, and even after a day’s worth of showering and handwashing, a bit of it still lingers.  Love this stuff so much!

The first booth I visited was aj & company, and was immediately smitten(ed?)by this apron:

Y’all know how I feel about adorable aprons, and this one just takes the cake!  LOVE the prints.

So retro and feminine and awesome!  I think tonight I may need to give it a test-drive and whip up some oatmeal cookies, eh?

Their etsy shop (linked above) is empty right now, but hopefully not for long.  There was lots more great stuff at the booth, that I barely even got to see (changing pads, zippered pouches, baby blankets…).  Hopefully they’ll update online soon!

My final purchase of the day was from…oh no…I’m afraid I don’t know!  Drats!  Well, it’s lovely:

(edit 3/28/09:  Just found the business card in the plastic sleeve!  This is by Barb of “Trash to Treasure:  Creative Recycling”.  Her shop is www.t2tcreativerecycling.etsy.com.  Sorry for the delay!)

On one side of the necklace, a delicate little daisy print.

And on the other…

It’s a Fitz’s bottlecap!  I love this so, so much.

(For those outside St. Louis, you might not’ve heard of Fitz’s before.  They make the BEST diet cream soda ever.  They also used to make “Dr Fizz”, a Mr Pibb-esque beverage that was oh-so-much more delicious.  But alas, it’s been discontinued.  Sad, sad story.)

If anybody recognizes the shop that might’ve made my little necklace, please let me know so I can give them due credit!

There were some other shops that I wasn’t able to patronize, but I definitely must in the future:

I Am What I Am had a booth of AWESOME jewelry, made from vintage and unusual bits and pieces.  So much fun!

Down Zipper sells pouches that are just begging to be filled with makeup, knitting notions and other miscellany.  So many adorable prints!  (And lots of sports-related ones right now, if that’s your thing.  Guess it has to do with that baskety-ball that everybody’s talking about? )

C. Bunny Binx had an adorable display of teensy little animals and gnomies that perfectly fit her motto of “specializing in high quality frivolity”.  Another etsy shop that’s empty for now, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on it – I really regret not taking a little clay gnome or bird home with me yesterday.

Pretty Silly Things should be called “Cool Awesome Things”.  Jackie takes images from old dictionaries and school textbooks and sandwiches them in glass, to make amazing unique pendants.  I almost bought one of a starling – the flip-side of the pendant had the dictionary definition page!  So neat.

Sew Good and Trendy
was probably my favorite shop, that I wasn’t able to buy from yesterday.  I LOVE her eco-friendly bags and her prices were SO reasonable (but alas, even “reasonable” is out of my reach right now ) She had one cross-body bag made of organic bamboo that included a reusable shopping bag.  Solid construction and really charming design.  It’s definitely on my “when we’re not so destitute” shopping list.

Two Girls and a Trailer sells some of the coolest modified art prints and greeting cards that I’ve ever seen!  I wanted to buy one for everybody I knew – they had the cutest sayings and the neatest style I think I’ve ever seen.  Can’t forget about this one!

~~~
After we left the craft fair, we took Roxie to the dog park and let her run herself stupid, then we loaded her up and headed to Forest Park where we did the whole circuit of trails – including letting her swim a bit in a couple ponds and streams! We finished the day relaxing and watching people fly kits outside the art museum (Art Hill is a popular gathering place in Forest Park), then Jeff and I headed to dinner and wandered about on the Loop for a while.  It was pretty much the perfect day
(too bad Monday had to come ’round, eh?)
Edit:
Alissa, just for you (omg I can’t believe I’m posting this….BLUGH!)
I’m seriously embarrassed to be seen in public like this.  I almost didn’t come to work today, it’s so bad.  HATETEEEEEE.  See how it’s all floofy and whooshy and flat? URGH.
Look at me, bitches!
I am sooooooooo riding the high of a great new haircut!
OMG I took 72 pictures of myself in that stupid mirror, and THIS is the best I can manage.
Anyway.
LOVE IT!!!  I was feeling ready for a change.  And, uh, I don’t really have any before pictures.  Let’s see here….
Umm, nope.  I just went through 10 pages of Flickr and don’t have any with me in them :-P   and I’m too lazy to go hook my laptop back up to the external drive.
You’ll just have to take my word for it:
Kate’s hair before = suckitude.
Kate’s hair after = teh awesome.
See?
I srsly love it.  It’s kinda choppy, kinda edgy, kinda wispy, kinda professional-ish.
My hair is my new favorite.
After the 72nd picture that turned out like this:
…I gave up.
(BTW, when I die I will go to the special level of hell that’s reserved for people who aren’t smart enough to button a cardigan correctly WHEN THEY’RE HAVING THEIR PICTURE TAKEN.  I think Amy Winehouse will be there, too.)
So when Jeff appeared, I enlisted him to hug me:
…and then to maybe take a picture of me that wasn’t complete suckitude:
That’s the only one we got, because in all the other pictures I’m either talking, have my eyes crossed, am yelling at a cat, or picking my nose.  Sometimes all four at once.
So here’s something much more pleasant, instead:
…yes, my ass rockin’ the Levi 518’s.
Now I can honestly say, I’ve shared too much on the internet :-P
Because I want to be like Dooce
((((AFOREPROMISED REAL POST COMING TONIGHT.  WHEN I HAVE TIME TO SIT DOWN AND ADDRESS IT PROPERLY)))).
What are your middle names?
Mine is my maiden name, and Jeff’s is Robert.
How long have you been together?
Just a couple weeks shy of 4 years.
How long did you know each other before you started dating?
4 months, maybe?  We were good friends first.
Who asked whom out?
It was pretty much mutual.  There was no exchanging of class rings or promises to go “steady” or anything.  Just sorta fell in place.
How old are each of you?
He’s 25 and I’m 23, and when we got together I was 19 and he was 21.  We were babies!  Infants!
Whose siblings do you see the most?
I don’t have any around anymore, and we only see his about 3 or 4 times a year.  So I guess Jeff wins that little contest by default.
Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
Right now it’s money, because we have none.  Disagreements about what constitutes discretionary income (the way I look at it, if we have enough money to be buying cigarettes, we have enough to be buying yarn).
Did you go to the same school?
Same college, anyway.  Truman State 2007!  Both English majors, even.
Are you from the same home town?
No.  I’m from KC, he’s from St. Louis, we met in the middle (and due north a bit).  And soon as we can we’re moving far, far, FAR away.  (uh…..just due-er north, actually, hopefully )
Who is smarter?
My IQ is 2 points higher than Jeff’s, a fact I don’t let him forget.
On the other hand, he’s the one who aims for law school.
On the other other hand, he was dumb enough to marry me.
On the other other other hand, I was the one who wanted a puppy.
You decide who’s smarter.
Who is the most sensitive?
Ahem. Next question.
Where do you eat out most as a couple?
I bring Taco Bell home once every couple weeks.  (See: poor)
Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Chicago, from Kirksville.  We need to rectify this…
Who has the worst temper?
Mine is more outwardly-directed and his is inward, but they can both be pretty ferocious.
Who does the cooking?
Me.  If I don’t cook one night, then it’s leftovers.  Though Jeff is quite capable at making turkey sandwiches.
Who is the neat-freak?
Neither of us are nuts-o about it, but PICK YOUR FUCKING TOWEL UP OFF THE FLOOR!
Who is more stubborn?
We both are.  But if there were a stubborn contest, I’d win.
Who hogs the bed?
Both, again.  It’s a constant land battle.
Who wakes up earlier?
Me.  Even on the weekends – I just can’t program myself to sleep in.  Jeff sleeps as late as he can get away with, on any given day.
Where was your first date?
We didn’t really have one – we just hung out.
Who is more jealous?
Me, probably.  Most of the “issues” are mine.
How long did it take to get serious?
I think we said “I love you” after approximately 3 days.
Who eats more?
Jeff.  I still can’t figure out where he puts it all!
Who does the laundry?
Yours truly.  Because I don’t want all my tshirts to be shrunk and handknit socks to be felted.
Who’s better with the computer?
It took Jeff about a month to explain the difference between memory and a hard drive in a way that I could understand.  That should sum it up.
Who drives when you are together?
Usually Jeff, but it’s not like “OMG BIG DEAL” if we run to the store and I drive.  Sometimes it’s just convenient.
Sockspose
(Title courteous of my Mommy Dearest )
Just in time…for…spring…
(DAMN!)
…I’ve made some great strides of the sockular variety.
In a fit of madness that was the direct result of an aggressive, proactive treatment of my ongoing UFO-itis, I have finished 3 socks in the past week.
As it happens, I’d made 3 other socks a few months back, each of which logically (and irritatingly) requiring a mate.
It was these mates I’d finished.
And so, naturally, what used to be a black sock, a green sock, and a blue sock…
…became a PAIR! of black sockS, a PAIR! of green sockS, and a PAIR! of blue sockS.
I love it when that happens.
First up, ol’ greenie:
(Jeff and I had our sock-modeling session in the quickly-fading afternoon light, after I got home from work last night.)
It’ll be no surprise to the knitters out there what pattern this is.  The only surprise is that it took me so damned long to make them – I’ve had the yarn and pattern married in my head since January of 2008, or thereabouts.  Glad to see them finally accomplished. (Oh, and the only modification was an extra repeat in the leg – 7 rather than 6).
The yarn is Wildfoote, which I always enjoy.  This is my first time using a heathered one, and it was a bit stiffer to work with than the other two colorways I’ve tried.  Didn’t soften up too terribly much with washing, either.  But that doesn’t stop me from liking the socks!
Hmm…got some donkey ears going on there, haven’t I? Ah, well.
~~~
Next up, my lovelies – the quintessential Trekking XXL waffle sock!

This is my second time pairing that yarn and that pattern, and it won’t be the last – I just like the combination so gosh-darn much!

I did play around with a couple different things on this pair, though.  Most obviously, I put on a picot cuff for a bit of sweetness and feminininininininity.  And also because I lurve picot cuffs.  They’re so cute and tidy, aren’t they?

I also worked the cuff and the first 2.75″ of the leg on US2’s before switching to my usual US1’s for the rest.  The Trekking does pretty well at this gauge, though I wouldn’t want to work a sole at it.  I did this because it enabled me to work the leg for 8″ without it slipping down to my cankles.  It’s all about the cankles.

I know that I freaking JUST finished these, but I already can’t wait to do another pair of waffles.  I might have to bust out one of my 50g odds-and-ends skeins and make some little sport socks, just to quell the urge.

…because it’s all about the URGE, you know.

~~~
Finally, the black pair.  Oh, the black pair.
I started these while waiting in line at the Obama rally on Oct. 18th.  I finished the first one while waiting in line to vote.  I started the second one while watching election night coverage.
And for some reason, it took me ’till 5 months later to finish it.
Don’t ask questions.  Really.  Don’t.  I’m ashamed enough as it is.
But y’know what I’m NOT ashamed of?
That’s right, I’m NOT ashamed of a finished pair of mansocks (even if they are covered in cat hair).
I’m NOT ashamed of completing 2 ENTIRE size 10 1/2 mansocks out of KnitPicks Palette, in 3×3 rib and stockinette stitch.
Because whichever way you cut it, that’s a lot of time and dedication and LOVE for the man who wears these mansocks.
I could do without the cat hair, though.
PS>I am so excited about tomorrow’s post, I could giggle like a schoolgirl.  But you’ll have to check back then, to see what I’ve got up my sleeve!
Long one for a sleepy morning
Would you rather be serious or be funny?
Funny, definitely.  Serious is for when I’m mad or sad.  (And sometimes even then I try to be funny)
Whole or skim milk?
Skim.  Jeff is a 2% guy.  Crazy.
Are you simple or complicated?
Both
Grey or gray?
Grey.  It’s more sophisticated-looking, I think.
Color or black & white photos?
Color.  I love color.
Lust or love?
LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEE.
Sunrise or sunset?
Sunset, cause then it’s almost time to sleep (I’m tired today )
M&Ms or Skittles?
Peanut M&Ms. I also like the peanut butter ones.
Rap or rock?
Rock.
Staying up late or waking up early?
Waking up early.  When I sleep in, I feel like I lost the most productive part of the day!  Of course, staying up late has its place once in a while, too.
TV or radio?
TV.  I’m too visual – I don’t have the patience for radio.
Eating apples or oranges?
Mmmmm both.  I love fresh fruit so, so, so much.  And dried fruit.  And canned fruit.  And cooked fruit.
Being hot or cold?
My comfort range is about 2* anyway, but I guess it’d be being cold.  Because when I’m hot, my hands get all sticky-sweaty and it’s hard to knit.
Sun or moon?
Neither.  I like cloudy days. But the moon is kinda pretty I guess.
Emeralds or rubies?
Both.  I have a ring that’s a ruby flower with emerald leaves and I love it.
Having 10 acquaintances or 1 best friend?
Oh, tough one. I’ve always been the “best friend” kind of person, but there’s been a dearth of best friends in my life for the last couple of years and, I confess, I grow lonely. So maybe acquaintances is the solution? (I’m keeping Mary’s answer here.  Except my good friends aren’t gone, they’re just…not in St. Louis.  Which is for the best – I don’t want to subject anyone to this city if it’s not absolutely necessary.)
Sun or rain?
Rain.  I love rainy days
Vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream?
Either, depending on mood.  But if we’re doing the “either or for the rest of your life” thing, I guess it’ll be chocolate.
Green beans or carrots?
Cooked green beans, and raw carrots.
Low fat or fat free?
Depends.  Fat free versions of some things are disgusting.
What is your biggest fear in the world?
A spider the size of my head, covered in little spiders, which are all carrying cockroaches.
Kids or no kids?
No kids, yet!
Cat or dog?
Both.  I’m sooooo not an either/or person in this regard.
Mustard or ketchup?
Ketchup! I love the stuff.  To a disturbing degree.
Hard cover books or soft cover books?
I like hard cover.  They feel more solid and permanent.
Newspaper or magazine?
Newsmagazine.  I love my Time!
Sandals or sneakers?
Apparently my Keen Newports are actually sandals.  So I guess it’ll be sandals, hands-down.  I never really wear tennis shoes anymore.
Red car or white car?
Black.
Happy & poor or sad & rich?
I’m not sure that it’s possible to be happy and poor.  Unless maybe by “poor” they mean “less poor than we are right now”.
Singing or dancing?
Singing, even though I’m no good at it.  I’m REALLY no good at dancing.  My version of dancing is, like, Elaine-quality.
Hugging or kissing?
Hugging. So cozy. (This).
Happy or sad?
Who wants to be sad?
Number of candles that appeared on your last birthday cake?
I don’t think I’ve had candles on my birthday cake for about 10 years.  But if you’re trying to be cutesy and ask me how old I am, I’m 23.
I want to live …
happily ever after.
2 doors or 4 (on a car)?
4.  I did the 2 door thing and it’s a pain in the ass.
Coffee or ice cream?
Srsly?  That’s like saying “bicycle or perfume?”.  They’re two totally different things.
Bridges or tunnels?
Tunnels are cozy and bridges are up high and kinda scary.
One pillow or two?
Two.  I hate feeling like my head is too low.
Favorite toothpaste?
whatever’s minty and whitening and on sale.
Favorite style of food?
Either Italian, or Mediterranean (Greek).
Favorite alcoholic drink?
I like a great, rich microbrew.  Or a bloody mary.  Or a pina colada.  Or a nice sweet wine, or a margarita with extra salt.  But probably not all at once
Favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Diet Coke, or skim milk, or vanilla tea.
Indoctrination.
Black tall boots (probably the last week of the season for those ), grey skirt, pink-y orange tshirt, black shrug.
Current mood:
General unhappiness.
SNOOORRRRKKKK
That was me, blowing my nose.
Because I have a C-O-L-D COLD.  A big ‘un.
And y’all know that I’m not usually all about the medicine.  I’ll take it if I need to, sure, but I’d much rather manage and get over it naturally.
That may have something to do with the fact that the last time I took cold medicine (yes, even the daytime stuff), I drove from Kirksville to St. Louis and DIDN’T REMEMBER IT.
Sensitive to it, I am.
So I’m loading up on the Vitamin C and keeping hydrated.  Yesterday I had 2000 mg of the C stuff, and 64 oz of tap water.  Which meant that I peed every 5 minutes.
…I just know that there’ll be a pregnancy rumour going around work about me, now.  That’s just how they operate.
But joke’s on them – I’m not knocked up, just well-hydrated!  HA!
…methinks I need a new standard for jokes.
~~~

Last night I was kept awake half the night by the sound of a black cat’s snaggleteeth and retracted claws scraping…scraping…scraping gently against the bedroom door.  Then the sound of a black cat opening the door.  Then the sound of Jeff getting out of bed, removing cat from bedroom, and putting a nightstand behind door to prevent re-entry.  Then the sound of a cat meowing about the INJUSTICE of being banished from the bedroom.  Then the sound of Jeff getting up again, moving the nightstand, going to the bathroom to pee, and inadvertently letting in the cat.

At this point, the cat lurked under the bed – out of reach – until we’d dropped back off to sleep.  Then he crept up onto the bed and reclaimed his rightful place on my head, where he spent the next 3 hours chewing on my ponytail.

Today is one of those days that I could really use a nap.  Wonder why?
